Israeli Opposition Parties Unite Behind Gadi Eisenkot for Prime Minister
The Israeli opposition has now jointly agreed to back former Israeli army chief Gadi Eisenkot as their choice for the next prime minister after the electoral deadlock of October 27. Coming to Herzliya before the official coalition discussions with President Isaac Herzog, the five opposition parties’ leaders—Eisenkot, Naftali Bennett, Avigdor Liberman, Yair Golan, and Yair Lapid—all committed themselves to move fast towards replacing Netanyahu’s government. But Netanyahu’s 53-seat bloc is still greater than the main opposition bloc of 48 seats, and reaching a 61 seat majority depends on the Arab parties that control 19 seats. For the opposition to come together, there are major hurdles posed by Netanyahu's demands for a national government under his Likud Party banner, and the strict preconditions demanded by Eisenkot and Liberman.
